The New Moon in Mutable Fire, conjoined Antares
On the 1st of December 2024
Sorcha stood on the Cliffs of Moher, the wind tugging at her ash brown hair, the sea below roaring as if trying to echo the song within her. The sun’s final light cast a gold sheen across the wild Atlantic. Closing her eyes, she drew her attention to the Presence that gently pulsated within.
Halting mid-stride, the blaring noise of the bustling 42nd Street fading, Finn caught the moment.
They had found each other by chance during an evening of trá and stories in a small, wood-panelled pub. Finn spoke of light’s strange dance, how photons seemed to know one another’s steps, even when separated. Sorcha had listened with a stillness that invited words to fill the space between them. When she finally spoke, her voice was like the sea at dusk, calm but teeming with depth. “Do you think we are like that?” she asked, her sage-lit eyes holding the question. “Tied to one another, no matter where the world scatters us?”
Finn’s answering smile was slow, deliberate. “Yes,” he said, and in that moment, the silence became their language, the unspoken shared with a clarity words could never hold. “We are carriers of each other’s light.”
As days turned into months, their paths interwove and diverged with the rhythm of life. Sometimes, weeks would pass before the comfort of a shared moment found them again. Finn would lose himself in the chaos of New York, where the city’s vibrancy seeped into his art, while Sorcha would wander the raw, rugged beauty of Connemara, sketching with charcoal-stained hands as the sky thundered above. Yet always, when creativity surged within her, a knowing smile would break across her face. Finn, she sensed, was painting somewhere, caught in the same lightning strike of inspiration. And in his moments of pause, eyes resting on a half-finished canvas, he would feel the sudden certainty that Sorcha was close in spirit, as if whispering encouragement just beyond sight.
What they shared was not bound by distance or time. On the day they parted, standing in the golden light of a late afternoon, neither of them wept. Sorcha reached out and traced her fingers lightly along his wrist. “We carry each other,” she said, more a promise than a farewell. Finn nodded, the words resting between them with a luminous weight.
Sorcha found herself in moments of solitude, her heart suddenly full as if someone had lit a lamp inside her. Sitting by the fire with a sketchpad balanced on her knee, she would stop, the words or lines she had been forming shifting like a breeze had touched them. She knew Finn was somewhere, lifting his head with the same sudden realisation, their shared light shimmering across miles.
For Finn, the star, Antares, became a nocturnal companion. On nights when the city’s noise pressed too tightly around him, he would step out and look up, knowing that Sorcha’s eyes were likely finding that same red shimmer. That was enough to stir a peace within him, to remind him that their spirits remained bound, exchanging glimmers of thought and feeling that kept them alive to each other’s being.
Their connection was more than fantasy or longing. It was merely pure creation, an exchange, a flicker of ideas, the spark of recognition that they were always part of each other’s world.
Over time, life wove new stories around them, but the pulse of that unseen link remained as sure as the wind sweeping the cliffs. It reminded them of the infinite ways one spirit could touch another. And when Finn stood before a finished piece that felt like a song only they knew, or Sorcha watched the dawn break, her heart full of unspoken words, they both understood that true connection transcends, lingering like the glint of sea glass in the sun.
Standing on that windswept cliff, bathed in the amber glow of the setting sun, its warm light painted the sky with hues of fire and gold, echoing the shared spark that bound them, Sorcha felt the quiet power of their connection, shining as if the distance between them was merely an illusion. It was a presence, an unwavering glow, a gift that lived in the spaces within them. As the Sun’s descent cast its final blaze, and in its luminous embrace touching Sorcha’s being, she found herself reflecting that once touched by another’s light, it remains ever-present, unfading, and alive.

Light
Art by Forest Chan
Light is unseen, yet it enables our vision. It speeds through the cosmos for years without losing energy. Light can be reduced to a single, indivisible photon, which can exist in two places at once. Although we must wait eight minutes for light from the Sun to reach us, for the light itself, its journey is instantaneous. Light shapes the plant world, giving form and life without having any physical structure itself. Consider, also, how language connects light with intelligence and understanding. Phrases such as “seeing the light” and “shedding light” imply enlightenment. Terms like “bright” and “brilliant” signify intelligence. The Indo-Germanic root “div” means to shine, linking the divine with light.
A fundamental energy permeating the universe, light brings the Sun’s warmth and the stars’ vibrations to Earth. The ancient religion of Zoroastrianism placed Ahura Mazda, god of light, as the supreme deity. The god of Genesis needed to create light before forming Heaven and Earth, a realm initially without shape or substance.
Wave or particle
Yet, physicists can explain little about the true nature of light or how it accomplishes such wonders. For centuries, a debate raged as to whether light was a wave or a particle. At times, it behaves like sound waves or ocean waves, transferring energy without moving particles. Other times, light acts like particles, with photons moving from one point to another at light speed.
In 1982, a team at the Institute of Optics in Paris, led by Alain Aspect, demonstrated a remarkable form of communication between photons. In their ground-breaking experiment, they generated two linked photons and sent them off in opposite directions at the speed of light. Astonishingly, these photons instantly aligned their polarisations, showcasing a kind of communication that seemed to transcend the speed of light. This phenomenon, known as entanglement, suggests that any change made to one photon will affect the other, no matter how vast the distance between them — even if they are light years apart. The very sunlight we experience could still carry traces of entanglement with particles from the star it once emerged from.
Whilst the nature of this interaction continues to baffle physicists, while mathematicians struggle to find a way to mathematically describe the process, yet curiously, a photon, time does not exist in the way we understand it. It travels along its own path instantaneously, and is everywhere, all at once and simultaneous.
The Light Body
Spiritual teachers consistently reference light being gOd and our light-giver, Sol, is at the roots of most of our spiritual tradition. We go to the light; we are brought back from the light; when someone is inspired, we speak of the light in their eyes; and when someone connects to Divinity, they radiate. That Divinity is contained within you. Known as the ‘Light Body’, it is an ethereal counterpart to your material self, glowing softly with the luminous essence of your soul. Often described as the spiritual anatomy of a person, it is composed of subtle energies that vibrate at higher frequencies than the dense physical matter we can perceive with our eyes. It is that very light body that holds all the memories, interactions, exchanges, within this plane and others, moving through time and space, instantaneously. When you connect with another, whether physically or otherwise, you literally retain the essence of their light body within you. Forever! Since we are somatic beings, when that encounter is physical, let alone emotional or sexual, the imprint on your light is carried with you, here, now and everywhere.
Mutable Fire
In astrology, this experience is called Mutable Fire, or Sagittarius. The element of Fire is the hardest of the four perceptions of consciousness for students to find language for. Why? Because Fire is invisible, ethereal, liminal and visionary! Fire is Light, and planets within the Fire realm are ‘lit’ up.
The term Mutability refers to the exchange of energy between two ‘beings’. Mutability is ever seeking, ever-communicating, ever-moving, ever-exchanging, and always conscious of ‘other’.
Put these two concepts together and you have the concept of entanglement, or more positively, entwinement. Entwinement can be thought of as the deep, invisible threads that links you to another, whether a relationship, past experiences, or unresolved emotional energies, binding and influencing one another across time and space.
The Heart Connection
The forthcoming lunation aligns with the star, Antares, and opposes Aldebaran. Antares offers a path to a deeper understanding of the heart. Free from consuming desires, such as attachment and obsessive thoughts, as the Watcher of the West, Antares aids in purging your Shadow and prepares you for the ‘little death’, replacing earthly desires with a spiritual fire that purifies your heart, allowing your soul to experience a higher form of love- agape.
Antares teaches the deepening of love within the heart, and, when combined with Aldebaran, unveils the mysteries of both the heart and mind. The path is challenging, as the urge to create is strong, and society often encourages living by desire. While Antares is historically seen as a rival to Mars, its consciousness is detached from human struggles, instead promoting a heart-centred consciousness that balances desires without suppressing them.
The Mysteries of the Heart channel a raw creative force that bridges the earthly and spiritual realms. To the unawakened, this force may feel like sexual desire, but true freedom comes from harnessing the heart’s power. Surrendering to this transformative fire is essential for releasing attachments and overcoming the constraints of earthly desires.
The deeper path that this New Moon in Mutable Fire offers is that akin to an initiate’s journey – to experience life fully, without attachment, judgment, or ownership, and to connect with others without expectation of reciprocity. Through invoking Antares, the fire in your belly becomes the fire of your soul, enabling your soul’s transmutation and migration between the material and spiritual worlds, whilst all the time retaining the physical and emotional connections which have awakened your sacred flame.
Conclusion
It is my prayer that you take time to honour all those who live within you, regardless of the nature of the relationship, how long the connection was for and how the interconnectivity unfolded. They are you, you are they. You are one, split in two, that makes one! Their light not only remembers you, and yours they, but you are always in connectivity, today, yesterday, tomorrow, for eternity, forever and a day! What you do to yourself, you do to them; what they feel about themselves, you embody; what you envision, they sense; what they create, is because they a lit by you and you by they. Creation is never isolated. It is a co-creative process, and it holds the light of all those who inspire you, they and us all.
What a time to recognise the intimate exchange of light between you and those in your world. What a time to give thanks and to honour their light in your heart. What a time to be alive.
Go well and when you look into the heart, may your eyes have the kindness and reverence of candlelight.
