Travelling is neither simply conducted because humans by nature are curious nor because of economic, environmental, political or social reasons; it is not undertaken to merely lose yourself, escaping for two weeks every year from the mundane rituals that fill our everyday urban lifestyles. Travel, at heart, is a means to keep your mind both mobile and awake. The Romantic poets inaugurated an era of travel because they were the great apostles of open eyes whereas Buddhist monks are often vagabonds, in part because they believe in wakefulness. Seen through the eyes of an astrologer travel ultimately induces a heightened state of awareness in which we become more mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed.
Esoteric wisdom teaches us that our souls are not anchored within our bodies but are embedded within a vaster vibratory Field of Intelligence which extends across time and space, the ultimate homage to the axiomatic statement – “All is One”. As such you draw into your own individual Field people, ideas and circumstances that trigger a multitude of growth possibilities that ultimately serve to help you reintegrate consciously to the Source.
Some three decades ago, when I was training to become a geographer, I was taught that our sense of place is composed of the natural and cultural dimensions unique to a particular region of the world. However, in the same way that there is no objective reality outside the lens of our internal perception, it is our perception of any given topographical and social landscape that defines how we ‘experience’ the people and environment we encounter therein.
Broadly speaking, if you are an outdoorsy, mountain-hiking type, your resonance with city life is going to filter how you perceive an individual city. If you are not into architecture, the high level of imagination invested in architecture in Florence, Italy, will not really catch your eye in the way that it would for someone who really appreciates form and structure. Moreover, imagine you are on a romantic trip in Paris but whilst there you discover that your lover is cheating on you. The intense emotions that accompany such an experience would undoubtedly colour your perception of Paris, and it would not be too surprising if you are unable to fully appreciate the architecture and other cultural nuances that make Paris, Paris.
On the latter point you could argue that you could have discovered your partner’s infidelity anywhere and at any time and that it was not Paris that revealed that betrayal. However that may not be strictly speaking true. Your unique relationship with geography means that you may continually attract a particular psycho-spiritual theme in a very specific region of the world due to the latent energetic potential that location holds for you, as the specific soul lessons necessary for your growth are held within a location as well as through time. What we find outside ourselves has to be inside ourselves for us to find it. Or, as Sir Thomas Browne sagely frames “We carry within us the wonders we seek without us. There is Africa and her prodigies in us.”
Everything and everyone we encounter throughout our lives has a purpose, serving to assist us in healing the illusion of our separation consciousness and rediscover our whole being. By expanding our frame of reference to include the world as a canvas onto which our internal process is mapped, the potential for healing and spiritual growth is immense.
Your internal process is literally global, a theme fundamental to the Mutable Fire, or Sagittarian, consciousness.
Mutable Fire is all about the sharing and spreading of, or transmitting, your light to all those with whom you come into contact with. You carry your values, beliefs and stories to the places you are drawn to. In many parts of the world, you become a living newspaper as your stories serve to open up the awareness of others. Whilst this maybe especially obvious in certain countries or cultures which are “closed” or “impoverished” where there is very limited contact with the wider world, but it is also true of anyone in any part of the world. I’m sure you can tell me of countless stories of your eyes being opened to a wider world, having come into contact with someone who is not indigenous to your local environment, whether they reside in a completely alien culture or are simply from a differing region of the country you reside in.
Of course you do not ‘have’ to travel abroad to experience this differing awareness as our book shelves, Facebook feeds, television sets carry the content of our individual relationship with ‘space’ and location. However the physical embodiment that takes place in situ when you step into your individual resonance with a cultural morphic field can open up your heart and eyes to a differing awareness through the people and circumstances that you encounter, for me, is one of the subtle beauties of physically travelling. Not only does contact with an ‘alternative’ perspective help you to step back and view your own reality differently, but you are also able to travel to moods, states of mind and hidden inward passages that you would otherwise seldom have cause to visit.
Within you lies this Mutable Fire consciousness. Therefore you can transmit your light and it turn receive another’s light. In turn, within our interconnected universe, each of us will come into contact with someone else’s light! Oft times we can forget that, especially when we travel. Our eyes are so full with new sights, sounds, smells and experiences that we forget that we are as much the object of scrutiny as the people we scrutinise! If the message of Mutable Fire is that you are spreading your light, therefore our consciousness AND you are receiving someone else’s light and consciousness, the question must be what is it that you are disseminating?
How do you respond to the dream that people tender to you? On a more practical level, do you encourage their notions of a ‘Land of Milk and Honey’ or a “Land of Forty Shades of Green”? Do you try to dampen their enthusiasm for a place that exists as a stereotypical fantasy in their mind? Moreover, your awareness and perspective is going to shape their awareness and perspective of what you discuss, be it cursory comparative discussion of cultural attitudes towards relationships or economic practises or a deep conversation about spiritual values or personal experiences.
All lunations merge with each to create a continuum of development plotted sequentially along successive signs of the zodiac. These signs are essentially the building blocks of our consciousness, which are moulded and shaped by our conscious choices. The process of growing consciously involves the drawing down of spiritual energies from the realm of ‘Fire’, through the mental and emotional bodies before concretising within the physical realm, therefore any lunation that occurs within the ‘fire realm’ is important because it is within this level of consciousness that you are ‘free’ to experience your patterns in their purest, least diluted manner.
However, since we inhabit the dense physical realm, we have created the illusion of separation and therefore this state of being feels alien and hard to fathom. When you are connected to your fire, not only can you access a deeper sense of purpose, but it can sustain you through life’s vicissitudes. Without fire you can forget your connection to spirit; without inner purpose, your soul’s intention may struggle to find expression; without vision, you cannot create intention and therefore reality. When you connect to what gives you passion and purpose; when you truly understand what triggers your ego or sense of pride; then the dense emotional states such as fear, doubt and insecurity can be dispelled. 
During the recent Fixed Water Mercury Retrogradation, you were being prompted to explore the internal emotional thought forms that underpin your reality. We are now moving into the re-ignition of the Mutable Fire (Sagittarian) lunation, so it would be ideal to focus upon what you believe and how that belief is carried within your languaging; your attitude towards those in your life and those random souls who briefly cross your path; and the belief that underpins your work, your family, your economic, social and spiritual life, since it is from this belief AND the emotional thought forms that inhabit our astral mind that influence the way in which we can share our light.
Whilst the energetic dynamics that attracts you to certain locales, cultures and people is the subject of another article, please take note of what you are gaining from those cultures, the ideas that you have come into contact with and the people who have cross your path this coming month. They are not randomers. They carry within their conversation seeds of meaning for your own psycho-spiritual process, as much as you carry within you something for them.
Listen to their messages and in turn be clear about your message. So the question, this lunation, remains how pure is your Light? Will you encourage, empower and inspire those people or will you remain blind and unresponsive. The Mutable Fire path is a voyage into a conspiracy of perception and imagination, keeping your soul mobile and awake, guiding you toward a better balance of wisdom and compassion – of seeing the world, and ultimately yourself, clearly, and yet feeling it truly and in the end of seeing yourself.
So let us share and bask in each other’s Light.
